Sled Dogs

Imaging the Arctic, In the Studio

I’m working on a series of paintings exploring Greenlandic sled dog behavior and character.

Only sled dogs are permitted above the Arctic Circle in Greenland. They’re rugged work animals, bred for strength and endurance on ice. The Smithsonian Magazine has a nice article if you’d like to learn more. I gave the animals a wide berth on my travels in Greenland, but was also taken by their behavior and individual character. I’m working on a series of 5×5 sled dog paintings, here’s my first one!

Thank you! They’re fun characters to explore.

The Inuit Dogs of Arctic Canada have been proven to be the same aboriginal landrace as the Inuit Dogs of Arctic Greenland. To learn lots more about the Inuit Dog, please visit The Fan Hitch, Website and Journal of the Inuit Sled Dog. Thanks.
